Feminine resistance through aesthetic agencies: reflections on the punk movement and graffiti in Aracaju

Abstract

This article aims to raise discussions around female agency modalities conveyed through the arts, with a focus on the punk movement and graffiti as practices of resistance. The methods adopted for data collection and interpretation were literature review, direct observation, semi-structured interviews and content analysis (Minayo, 2014). After contact with the fields, it was possible to conclude that, in the context of contemporary urban cultures, the arts can be configured as resources for contesting hegemonically masculine spaces by women linked to these contexts, something that we were able to identify both in the field of graffiti and the punk movement in the city of Aracaju, and which allowed us to associate these practices with the concept of aesthetic agencies thought by Marcon (2019) to define new modalities of contemporary political activism.

Author Biographies

Erna Barros, Federal University of Sergipe

PhD in Sociology from the Federal University of Sergipe - UFS (2020), Master in Multimedia from the Institute of Arts of the State University of Campinas - UNICAMP (2012), and journalist from the Federal University of Alagoas - UFAL (2008). She is an adjunct professor at the Department of Social Communication (Dcos) at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) in the Publicity and Propaganda Course. She is interested in studies related to photography in the most diverse areas of communication and in the problematization of images in the field of visual arts, advertising, journalism, cinema and social sciences.

Letícia Galvão, Federal University of Sergipe

Graduated in Social Sciences (UFS), Master and PhD student in Sociology by the Graduate Program in Sociology at the Federal University of Sergipe (PPGS/UFS). Participated in the Laboratory of Studies of Politics and Power (LEPP) as a scientific initiation scholarship holder in studies on medical and legal elites in Sergipe, guided by prof. Dr Fernanda Rios Petrarca, also worked in research projects on youth and public policies guided by Prof. doctor Frank Nilton Marcon and also from the extension project "Emergency Sociological Intervention: research and purposeful extension on problems and social representations of the university community about Covid-19" guided by Prof. Dr Tamara Oliveira. She works as a collaborating researcher in research projects on youth and public policies and as a member of the Group for Cultural Studies, Identities and Interethnic Relations (GERTs). During her master's degree, she researched lifestyles and cultural activism from the punk movement in Aracaju. She is currently researching young women's right to the city through surfing and skateboarding in Aracaju.
