The present work, which is theoretical by nature, addresses the conceptual dimension of political sociology. The text argues that there are two distinct possibilities of focus for political sociology: a political sociology of politics and a political sociology of the political. To distinguish both, we based the article on the post-structuralist theorization of Laclau and Mouffe and how the authors use such terms. As the political sociology of politics can be considered a more traditional form of political sociology, the text focuses on detailing what would be the political sociology of the political by showing a specific example of a category of analysis of the political to understand phenomena in social spheres that cannot be confused with the sphere of politics. This category is populism, managed for analyzing law, medicine, and religion.
