5. Special Issue

5.(a) TOMO receives proposals for Special Issues (SI) in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. Proposals can be submitted at any time. TOMO can also launch an open call for SI proposals. SIs are also published in the rolling pass format.

5.(b) The requirements for submitting a SI are:

a) By the time of submission all the SI proponents must hold a PhD degree, and at least one of the proponents must have been granted a PhD 10 years prior to the SI proposal (at the least). If one of the proponents of the SI is from the Federal University of Sergipe, the others must be from other institutions. TOMO accepts a maximum of three (03) proponents for the SI.

b) All manuscripts in the SI must have a PhD as the sole or the first author. The co-author(s) must hold, at least, a Master degree.

c) At least 80% of the manuscript authors for the whole SI must be external to UFS.

d)At least 70% of the authors for the whole SI must have at least one of their degrees in the following areas: Social Sciences; Sociology; Anthropology; Political Science;

e) At least one manuscript should be authored by foreign researchers;

f) All manuscripts must be submitted through the OJS platform on the TOMO journal website;

g) All manuscripts will be evaluated through a double review format. One review will be issued by the proponent(s) of the SI, who will be aware of the authorship of the article. The other reviewer will receive the manuscript anonymously through the "single blind peer review" format.

h) TOMO does not have enough financial resources for grammatical and writing revisions of manuscripts written in English or Spanish. However, it does accept publications in these languages. If there is a possibility for authors of the SI to publish in these languages TOMO asks that their submissions are as close as possible to a native writing.

i) Manuscripts submitted to SIs in TOMO must be scientific articles, critical reviews, or interviews (see above the guidelines for each submission format).

j) SIs must have a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 8 manuscripts.

5.(c) Proposals should be sent to: revistatomo@gmail.com, along with the following documents:

5.(d) Document 01: “Summary of SI proposal”, with the following information:

a) SI title;

b) Name of each proponent followed by institutional affiliation in three levels, from the highest to the lowest (for example, University; Faculty; Department); City, State, and Country.

c) Link to the Orcid number of all the proponents.

d) Link to the Lattes CV of all the Brazilian proponents.

e) Summary of the proposal containing the justification, the main question that guides the general discussion, the objectives, a list of possible related topics, and the potential to reach an international audience.

f) If the SI has invited authors, it is necessary to include the list with their names and their institutional affiliation.

5.(e) Document 02: “Text for the Open Call” (if the proposal considers opening a public call for submissions) with the following information:

a) The open call must not exceed 300 words and must be written in Portuguese, Spanish, and English.

b) The open call must include the SIs topic, rationale, and objectives, as well as the expected theoretical and methodological approaches of submissions intended for the SI.

5.(f) The SI proposal will be evaluated by TOMO’s Editorial Team in regards to its focus and scope, adequacy to the journal’s guidelines and general requirements, and relevance as a “special” topic in the journal’s fields of interest. In case of approval, the proponents will be informed by TOMO’s Chief-Editor about the possible month/year for publication of the SI.

5.(g) The timeline for the editorial organization (evaluation and publication process) of a SI is, at least, 6 months. The timeline for public calls for manuscripts for the SI must occur within a minimum period of 3 months.

5.(h) TOMO adopts the rolling pass format. In the case of a SI with an open call manuscripts must be grouped on the OJS platform and must wait until the last submission day of the open call. After reaching the deadline, each article will go through the editorial process in the “continuous flow” format and will be published as they are ready for publication. Once all the manuscripts of the SI have been published the organizers will publish the introduction and TOMO will publicize the set of manuscripts as a SI.

5.(i) The SI introduction must be an unpublished, original, and analytical manuscript and cannot consist only of a summary of the published manuscripts.

ABNT guidelines for submissions

  • For direct citations in the text, use the Author-Date system. For example: (Weber, 2002, p.32).

  • Citations with less than three lines will be integrated into the paragraph, placed between quotation marks and followed by the surname of the referred author, year of publication, and page(s), all in parentheses and separated by commas (Weber, 2002, p. 32).

  • Quotations with more than three lines will be separated from the text in a special paragraph (four cm spacing to left margin, single spacing between lines, and font 10, following the example of this paragraph).

  • TOMO suggests that authors avoid the use of footnotes. When the use of footnotes is absolutely needed, they should be numbered consecutively within the text and placed at the end of the page. They also should be as short as possible.

  • At the end of the manuscript, in the Bibliographical References section, the authors must be indicated by last name, in capital letters, followed by the first name and other surnames. Authors must be separated by a semicolon, followed by a space. When there are up to three authors, all must be indicated. When there are more than three authors it is also convenient to indicate all of them. However, it is allowed to indicate only the first author followed by the expression et al.

  • When authorship is unknown the entry must be made by title. The term “Anonymous” or the expression “Author unknown” cannot be used.

  • The bibliography must be listed at the end of the manuscript, in the alphabetical order of the last names, according to the standardization of ABNT NBR 6023. Some examples are given bellow:
