Abstract

Advancing a theoretical reflection on images during independent struggles, when identities play a crucial role, I will address an exercise of contrasts between anti-colonial cinema and post-colonial cinema in Guinea-Bissau. On one hand, the anti-colonial cinema emerged during the armed struggle against Portuguese colonialism and it was pushed by the Third Cinema Movement, which was exclusively directed by non-Guinean filmmakers. On the other hand, the post-colonial cinema was instigated by Guinean filmmakers and it is characterized by the contradictions between an extreme international dependence and the potentialities generated by the autonomy and the creativity of the younger sections of the population.  This will be a reflection on the ideological and symbolic conflicts created by the production of images in processes of political struggle and social emancipation.
