Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nutritional treatment of serious obese patients candidate to bariatric surgery
Abstract
Objective: to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nutritional treatment of severely obese patients who are candidates for bariatric surgery. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out in a nutrition outpatient clinic with patients candidates for bariatric surgery with data related to face-to-face consultations before the COVID-19 pandemic and to consultations by telephone during the pandemic. Socioeconomic, clinical, anthropometric data and a structured questionnaire were collected about presence of flu syndrome; medical diagnosis and safety in information about COVID-19 and changes in eating habits during this period. For descriptive statistical analysis, means, standard deviation and frequencies were used and the Chi-square test was used to compare categorical variables. Results: 47 patients participated in the study, with a mean age of 45.1 ± 9.9 years, the majority being female (91.5%). The most prevalent risk comorbidity for COVID-19 was systemic arterial hypertension, both alone and in association with other diseases, followed by type 2 diabetes mellitus. Most patients felt properly informed, however, insecure (p < 0.001) regarding the disease. Regarding food consumption, before social distancing 55.3% (p < 0.001) of patients reported following the guidelines for the consumption of adequate and healthy food prescribed by nutritionists and when questioned about this consumption during the pandemic, the majority ( p <0.038) reported that the isolation affected their food in some way, 61.7% (p < 0.001) were unable to maintain the routine of healthy eating habits and 21.3% (p < 0.001) described a high consumption of processed and / or ultraprocessed foods. Conclusion: Insecurity and inadequate food consumption, due to the pandemic, were prevalent in the majority of severely obese patients in the study, with an impact on adherence to the nutritional treatment prescribed as an important part for the control of comorbidities and for the preparation of bariatric surgery.
