Abstract

Linguistic politeness is an important tool in interactions between humans and Artificial Intelligences (AIs), helping to
simulate human conversations by creating emotional bonds. Based on the studies by Brown and Levinson (1987), Paiva (2008; 2020), and Araujo and Araujo (2024), this study investigated how the chatbots Gemini, ChatGPT, and Copilot
humanize their advice using politeness strategies. The research was a mixed-method, exploratory, comparative, and
experimental design, and analyzed how these chatbots alternate politeness patterns. The results indicated that the initial and humanized advice used a pattern of strategies in both stages of the test. In the second stage, Gemini and ChatGPT demonstrated greater closeness, empathy, and intimacy, while Copilot was the one that humanized its advice the least. It is concluded that, although there is a group of forty strategies, the three chatbots showed an algorithmic preference for certain politeness strategies.
