Abstract

The land survey initiated by the 1850 Land Law was carried out in Sergipe from 1856 onwards and gave rise to an extensive collection of property records which reveal structural aspects of land ownership in the province. Among the various aspects that can be analyzed, the voluminous records of undivided ownership stand out. This article explores these records using a quantitative and spatial approach, seeking to differentiate regions and indicate local dynamics of land use and occupation. The results point to the dominance of undivided possessions, especially in less capitalized regions, suggesting that non-demarcation was a strategy for maintaining access to land in a province marked by ancient occupation and the fractioning of properties through inheritance.
