Sex and gender androcentric biases affect creativity and excellence in science and technology, as well as influence the practices and knowledge coming out of scientific institutions. In this paper, we present a literature review within the field of gender and science studies, bringing in classic and foundational authors to the field, as well as more recent and intersectional perspectives. We discuss the production of ignorance associated with sex and gender bias in science, highlighting how the sex and gender perspective has been neglected both in the preparation and development of studies and in the reporting and dissemination of results. As a main conclusion, we highlight that including women and other minorities as subjects and doers of research is only the first step in promoting gender equality in science.
