Abstract

This critical review analyzes the book *Photography in Portuguese Colonial Africa, 1860–1975*, edited by Filipa Lowndes Vicente and Afonso Dias Ramos, which brings together studies dedicated to analyzing the role of photography in the construction of the Portuguese colonial imagination in Africa between the 19th and 20th centuries. The book examines the use of images as instruments of power, control, and propaganda, as well as their reappropriation in the context of African resistance movements and decolonization processes. The analysis highlights the book’s relevance to studies on colonial memory, visual archives, and ethnic identity, with a special focus on the Mozambican case and dialogues within the Portuguese-speaking world.
