Abstract

The aim is to investigate the relationship between urban sprawl and geographical influence in the city of São Paulo between 1850 and 1889, a period immediately prior to significant growth and spatial change in the city. The historical sources that correspond to the indicators of urban sprawl are: demographic data from the 19th century, the spatial location of religious temples, the route of the first railroad, selected urban plans and City Council minutes. For the analysis, we used a methodological approach based on georeferencing, in order to demonstrate urban sprawl by cross-referencing a variety of historical and geographical information (rivers and slopes). The data allowed us to verify the possible relationship between the physical and geographical aspects and the expansion of the urban layout in the city.
