Abstract

The 1840s were pivotal in the restructuring of the Imperial Government, following the turbulent years of the Regency Period. The Crown had two main challenges: Consolidate its borders and strengthening its economy. In this in context Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagem publish the “Memorial Orgânico” in 1940, with the proposal for reformulating the geopolitics and administration of the Empire of Brazil. The Viscount of Porto Seguro's proposals focused on occupying the national territory, highlighting necessary changes in the labor system by suggesting the use of indigenous and immigrant labor as the main alternatives to dismantling the system of enslaved labor. This article analyzes Varnhagen's proposals for restructuring the provinces and relocating their capitals, pointing out the impacts of this project on the debates surrounding the administrative division of the Empire of Brazil.

Cristiano Luís Christillino, Paraíba State University

PhD in History from the Fluminense Federal University and Post-Doctorate in History at the Federal University of Pernambuco and the Federal University of Sergipe. He is currently an associate professor at the State University of Paraíba and a permanent professor in the Graduate Program in History at the Federal University of Pernambuco.

José Mácio Ramalho Teódulo, Paraíba State University

He holds a PhD in Geography from the Federal University of Ceará, a Master's degree in Geosciences from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte and a degree in Geography from the Federal University of Paraíba. He is currently a professor at the State University of Paraíba.
