Abstract

This article aims to analyze the content of the debate promoted by the Goiás press about the Abbade mines, located in the city of Meia-Ponte. The mining activities, which began in 1881, after four years, were denounced by the city council, due to the pollution it was causing in the Rio das Almas. The Goiás press, acting as a “mobilizing force” of opinion, as Bourdieu (2002) would say, gave wide repercussion to the arguments used by Companhia Minadora and the authorities involved, tending, however, to support the Company's cause, which was seen as a hope for the material progress of Goiás. Dissatisfied with the progress of the complaints, the Meia-Ponte elite, together with popular people, revolted in 1887, breaking and burning the mining facilities.
