DROUGHT, MISERY AND ILLEGAL ENSLAVEMENT IN THE NOVEL HUNGER (1890) BY RODOLFO TEÓFILO

The novel A Famine, by Rodolfo Teófico, paints a detailed portrait of the social effects of the drought on the poor and miserable people of Ceará, in the calamitous years between 1877 and 1879. The plot of the novel seeks to reconstruct the trajectory of a family of ruined landowners who became joins the crowds of country people heading towards the capital, Fortaleza, but also provides the reader with a series of scenes, characters and situations marked by cruelty, at a time of great social disorder. The novel's plot provides a rare example of the mechanisms used to achieve the enslavement of free people. From a historical perspective, based on research and current historiography dedicated to the subject, our analysis will focus on examining the way in which the book deals with this topic.
