Abstract

This article aims to analyze the construction of the Brazilian representation at the Universal Exhibition in London, in 1862, through the book developed and published for this event. Our sources are, therefore, the book entitled Brasil Pitoresco, by Charles Ribeyrilles, as well as the photographic album attached to it, also called Brasil Pitoresco, by Victor Frond. Both the book and the photographic album were used to build a historical and visual representation of the nation, always prioritizing the protagonism of the Imperial Family and D. Pedro II. We will, therefore, problematize the main perspectives of such productions, dialoguing with the political, social and cultural context of that time.
