HAS ESCAPED MORE THAN ONCE AND ALWAYS CHANGES HIS NAME

THE ESCAPE ANNOUNCEMENTS IN THE NEWSPAPERS OF NEWSPAPERS OF THE 19TH CENTURY

Abstract

This article analyzes the representations of enslaved people in the escape advertisements section of Piauí periodicals from the 19th century. We will highlight the distribution of advertisements throughout this century, identify the types of escapes carried out in this province and carry out an analysis regarding the profile of the enslaved: name, age group, sex, birthplace, color, description of the eyes, nose and mouth , adjectives of beauty, marks of violence, health conditions, illnesses and occupations. This work was based on bibliographical research with a theoretical and historiographical basis in research produced on the subject, such as: Thompson (1998), Freyre (2010), Schwarcz (2017), Reis e Silva (1989), Gomes (1996) , among other authors. The search for newspaper sources took place on the website of the Journalism and Communication Research Center (NUJOC), of the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI), and in the Digital Hemeroteca of the National Library. Regarding the methodology of the investigative process, we adopted descriptive historical research, based on consultation and analysis of the documentary base, first to map past experiences, locate the subjects in time and space, in order to provide answers to the questions raised. We hope that this work will help fill the gaps in the historiography regarding the study of slavery in Piauí, and contribute, enrich and excite the interest of new researchers.
