Abstract

On October 31, 2025, Armand Mattelart passed away in France at the age of 89. Born in Belgium in 1936, he studied law and demography before settling in Chile in 1962, where he advised the Allende government. After the 1973 coup d'état, he was exiled to France with his family. In his vast body of work, often in collaboration with Michèle Mattelart, he analyzed the links between communication, economics, and global hegemony. He also investigated imaginaries about communication and the role of technologies in social control. He was a committed intellectual, active in the public sphere and close to emerging cultural movements.
