Abstract

This paper discusses a dimension of urban life which, during the nineteenth-century, marked the more regular presence of technical innovations applied to everyday organization and the realm of production: artificial illumination. Through the examination of the gas system introduction and consolidation in the city of Fortaleza (Ceará), it aims to relate this working to the global expansion of capitalist economy, expressed by the opening of new markets based on investments, knowledge, professionals, raw materials and equipment from industrial countries. This analysis focuses on the impact of lighting service over the dwellers’ and voyagers’ perception and its role on the creation of meanings attached to time passing.
