Abstract

The objective of this article is to verify whether there are consequentialist elements in the Rawlsian doctrine, that is, in justice as fairness. The first step in achieving this objective is to analyze the methodology adopted by Rawls. In other words, present and analyze the original position, which is what Rawls calls his thought experiment and its four stages. It is through this procedure that hypothetical contractors consider, choose and deliberate on the principles of justice that regulate the basic structure of society. In other words, political and socioeconomic institutional arrangements. It is about identifying how the veil of ignorance operates, a Rawlsian device that ensures the moral quality of hypothetical contracting parties. It is concluded that consequentialist arguments play a relevant role in justifying the choice of the two Rawlsian principles of justice, that is, justice as fairness.
