Abstract

This article examines the pursuit of justice for victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo following the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, with a focus on reparative justice. Amid armed conflict, sexual violence had a devastating impact, especially on women and girls in the eastern region of the country, highlighting the urgency of comprehensive responses. Based on reports from international organizations and academic studies, the research analyzes specialized courts and psychosocial support programs as central strategies. However, impunity and limited resources hinder the effectiveness of these efforts. Reparative justice goes beyond punishing perpetrators; it involves restoring victims' well-being, ensuring rights, and preventing further violations. Despite advances in global awareness and gender policies, structural and political obstacles remain. The preservation of memory, as seen in the annual August 2nd commemoration by the Congolese diaspora, proves essential in reaffirming individual stories and strengthening collective identity.
