Ecofeminism and Sustainable Development

an environmental and gender perspective

Abstract

This study addresses ecofeminism from the perspective of Information Science as a concept that articulates the struggle for women’s rights with environmental preservation, recognizing that women, especially those belonging to vulnerable groups, are more intensely affected by the consequences of the global ecological crisis. It is understood that addressing climate change requires acknowledging the active role of women in sustainable production and natural resource management. Based on a critical perspective, the research discusses sustainable development considering the socio-environmental impacts of the current system. The study is basic in nature, with a qualitative approach, and is descriptive and bibliographic in type, conducted through a review of specialized literature. The analysis shows that the scarcity of resources and the deterioration of living conditions especially affect women engaged in food production and in the reuse of raw materials derived from biodiversity. The findings also highlight that the prevailing capitalist model, by prioritizing profit and capital accumulation, contributes to the intensification of socio-environmental inequalities. The study concludes that ecofeminism provides a relevant theoretical-methodological framework to rethink development, promoting a model of resource management based on gender equity, the appreciation of traditional knowledge, and sustainable practices that oppose the dominant logic of exploitation.
